Nest Watercolour Painting Tutorial – Blackbird Egg PDF Lesson

Blackbird eggs are a green-blue or blue in colour with lots of red-brown speckles.  This can give the impression that the eggs is entirely brown depending on the density.  The female lays them in a substantial nest built of twigs and mud lined with fine grasses.  Through the season she may have up to four broods and indeed the nest is sometimes reused.  The male is an attentive father, he helps to feed the chicks and will then take responsibility for the newly fledged chicks.  Meanwhile, the female is often building her energy levels again to lay another brood.

This project is relatively straightforward, however, it introduces you to a number of different techniques.  The layering of masking fluid is an interesting skill to learn and can be used in future projects involving depth of detail.

This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this nest in a matter of minutes.  You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive!  You will receive a 20-page PDF document.  Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines.  However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.

I really like to focus on the watercolour techniques needed to create a realistic painting.  Likewise, I love sharing this style of painting through my tutorials and hope I inspire others to create detailed wildlife portraits too.
