PDF Watercolour Painting Lesson – Mussel Shell & Beach Sand Study
Blue Mussels are found around the cost of the British Isles. Indeed, we found this particular shell at Westward Ho! on the North Devon coast. They are found in water that is 5 to 10 metres deep and often within intertidal zones. They attach to rocks and other hard surfaces, but are able to move around if they need to. Their shells vary but are generally purple, blue or dark brown. We were struck by just how purple this shell was, actually the photo I worked from didn’t do it justice.
This tutorial is very suited to beginners as I go through every stage and break each one down into smaller steps. With the sand in-particular there is scope to experiment and try different colours and effects. I’ve focussed on splattering, but you could apply washes with splattering over the top, or introduce different colours or other elements. As a small study which shouldn’t take too long to paint there is less to be lost from a bit of experimenting.
This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this mussel shell in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 19-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.

I really like to focus on the watercolour techniques needed to create a realistic painting. Likewise, I love sharing this style of painting through my tutorials and hope I inspire others to create detailed wildlife portraits too.
