Red Squirrel Original Watercolour Painting – Realistic, Fine Art Detail
Red Squirrels are our native squirrel species here in the UK. The more common grey was a species introduced from North America in the 1800s which subsequently escaped from captivity. Unfortunately the greys are a carrier of a disease which doesn’t seem to affect them but which kills red squirrels. In addition they out compete the reds for certain foods. There remain small pockets of red squirrels in England, but the majority are found in Scotland. They spend a lot of their time in the tree canopy and it is here that they will build their nest or drey. Two to three young are usually born early in the year and often a second similar sized litter around May to June.
