White fur watercolour study tutorial

Many of our watercolour tutorials obviously incorporate fur.  However, learning the technique whilst doing the actual painting can be quite a daunting prospect.  This short study gives you a chance to practise all the techniques and learn about layering without the pressure.  I’ve chosen white curly fur for this study, but in the future will hope to work on other colours and types of fur too.  For beginners, this would be a great way to get to grips with the process of laying down layers of wash and detail.

I hope that it will give everyone the confidence to work on furry projects in the future and to have faith that the process will work.  Sometimes it can be disheartening in the middle stages thinking it doesn’t look like much, but then it does all come together at the end.

Whatever you decide to do, let’s get them brushes wet.

Paul 🙂

Use the chapters to find specific stages of this fur study tutorial.   You will need the following colours: French ultramarine, cerulean blue, alizarin crimson, opera rose, Payne’s grey, burnt umber, lamp black and opaque white.

I would love to see your finished painting and share it within the student gallery.

And I would be very interested to know the difficulty rating you would give this project.

I do hope you have enjoyed this tutorial.  Until the next time, keep those brushes wet!  Paul
