Paul Hopkinson - Wildlife Artist

This is a brand-new medium for me - watercolour pencils.  I've been wanting to try them for ages, hopefully you will enjoy the experience too!

Cat Eye Study

Creating the incredible skin texture, and the three-dimensional wrinkles, is probably one of the most challenging aspects of this particular study.

Elephant Eye Study

 Eyes tend to be the first thing that we look at within a painting, and getting them right is vital.  This project breaks the process down, and enables a systematic approach. 

Dog's Eye Study

This drop falling off the tip of a blade of grass makes a lovely project in its own right.  However, you may want to incorporate drips and drops into other wildlife paintings.

Water Droplet

This is a small study, suitable for beginners.  I show the whole process in detail, and break it down into manageable chunks so that you understand what to do at every stage.

Cat's Nose Study

As animal artists, we occasionally come across, a wet, floppy tongue. So having some understanding on how to structure such a muscle will help with your wildlife portrait studies. 

Dog's Tongue Study

I’ve super-sized the image, so that I am working on a large scale.  I’ve also strengthened the tone off my darkest shade, so you can easily see what I am doing with this study.

Bird Leg & Foot Study

In these tutorials, we begin by working on a tonal study with just one colour.  This helps us focus on the lights and darks, and we can use this knowledge later in a colour study.

Rock Study

Once the tonal study is complete, we use the techniques we have learnt, to complete a full colour study piece. An ideal introduction to painting realistic bark.

Bark Study

Many of our watercolour tutorials incorporate fur. However, learning the technique whilst doing an actual painting can be quite a daunting prospect, so here's a chance to practise.

Fur Studies

This is a short study tutorial which will take you through all the stages of painting a bill.  You can use the techniques you learn when you paint other large beaks.  

Duck's Beak

This short study has a number of benefits.  You could add a bird to the top, paint a butterfly perched upon it, or even add it to a garden painting of your choice.

Old Spade Handle

We are going back to basics with a focused study on a brick. Often wildlife paintings will feature an old wall or stone barn and getting the bricks to look authentic can be tricky.

This is a larger than life study and for it to look realistic we really need to embrace all the subtle changes of colour, the little lines, marks and even the reflection images.

Cat's Eye Study

This tutorial is very suited to beginners, as I go through every stage & break each down into smaller steps.  With the sand, there is scope to experiment and try different colours.

Mussel Shell

Learning how to paint snow is an important aspect of working on wintery wildlife scenes.  The addition of snow can make or break the piece, and it can't be simply blocked in.

Snow

This study will show you how to build texture & form within smooth objects. You will need to look closely at the subject to pick out subtle tonal changes in order to recreate them.

Round Pebble

This in-depth study of a leather collar really enables us to focus on detail.  As no doubt at some time or another you are probably going to be asked to paint a dog for someone.

It will be entirely up to you how you approach the study.  Paint all the elements separately, mask off the critters, or follow me and lift off sections of the gate for the 🦋🐞🐌.

Old Wooden Gate

The live paint-along study of a Cat’s Eye was something I decided to have a go at.  Something a bit different to offer everyone, a bit of fun and a bit of a personal challenge.

We are working with a limited palette of just 6 colours, which include black and white.  I have classed the project as suitable for a beginner as it is relatively straightforward.

Pheasant Feather

Over the years, students have told me that one of the hardest parts of painting birds is their feet.  So this tutorial has a specific focus on painting the feet of a Greenfinch.

Bird's Feet & Leg Study

This shorter tutorial gives opportunity for practising quite a few skills.  I have classed this as a project suitable for a beginner.  But you can add as much detail as you want.

Peacock Feather

This is one area that I know some students have struggled to get right. In this video, I will concentrate on just the nose to give you a good understanding of how to paint one.

Dog's Nose Study

Painting the eye of an animal is always one of those things I like to spend quite a lot of time on.  It has to be right to replicate the life we see in there.

Hare's Eye Study

In this short tutorial, I will show you how to paint eggs with a suggestion of the nest too.  We will concentrate on creating a 3-D painting by building our layers carefully.
