Description

Original Painting of a Bearded Reedling (Panurus biarmicus) by Wildlife Artist & Online Art Tutor Paul Hopkinson

Bearded Reedlings, or Bearded Tits as they used to be known, are a small bird found in large reedbeds. They have an obvious black moustache and no beard, so don’t be fooled by their name. They have an interesting ability to completely switch their diet. In the summer months, they will heat insects, but then in the winter eat seeds, which are by then more plentiful. To grind the seeds they eat grit, and it is around grit trays that we have usually seen them on nature reserves.
