Learn to Paint a Bumblebee in Watercolour, with my Step by Step Downloadable PDF Tutorial

Buff-tails are our largest bumblebee here in the UK. They will utilise old mammal nests for their own nests, which may contain up to 600 bees. Interestingly the workers have a white tail, so if you spot the buff-tail, you know you are looking at a queen, although her size will also give her away! She will be one of the first bees to emerge, and can be on the wing from February onwards, although with climate warming, here in the south of England, they can be active all year round. So providing sources of winter nectar can really benefit them.

This is an intermediate project, with a few different elements. Firstly, we are painting white flowers on white paper, and that is always challenging. Secondly, the bee has quite a complicated body structure, with interestingly shaped legs, lots of fur and of course those delicate wings. Take your time with this project, and if you need to zoom into the photo so you understand how things interlink, obviously do so, but then zoom back out, so you are not trying to paint more than you can physically see.

This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting the Bumblebee in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 33-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.

Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed, you can dip in and out of the content, you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.

Have fun with this lesson, take your time and let me know how you get on. Try printing off the last few pages which have the larger versions of the step-by-step photos for additional help.
