Watercolor Pen and Wash Red-tailed Bumble Bee Painting – Detailed PDF Lesson with Work in Progress Photos and Written Guidance
The Red-Tailed Bumblebee is an abundance species in the UK, indeed I took the photo locally in fields which are part of a rewilding project. This is a male with the additional yellow hair around the head and thorax, the female just has black fur and the orange tail. These bees nest underground, often making use of a vacant vole burrow, a hole under a stone or even below a wall.
The focus of this project is very much on the pen and ink work, and the splash of watercolour is reserved for just the bee. However, there is nothing to stop you applying wash to the whole piece, I’d be very interested in seeing the results of this, as I toyed with the idea myself.
The drawing side of this project is incredibly detailed and complex, I would recommend taking regular breaks and working for just short periods of time. Maybe do a few bits each day and gradually build up the picture. When you get to the bee, it will take no time at all! If the complete project looks too complex, why not just do the bee and a few petals around it?
This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this Red-tailed Bumble Bee in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 27-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.
Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed, you can dip in and out of the content, you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.
Have fun with this lesson, take your time and let me know how you get on. Try printing off the last few pages which have the larger versions of the step-by-step photos for additional help.
