How to Paint with Watercolors – Downloadable Chickadee PDF Tutorial
Black Capped Chickadee are a familiar bird in much of North America and Canada. They are ‘friendly’ birds often investigating people and quickly finding bird feeders. As such this bird is probably one of the first bird species that people learn.
The colours within this project are muted. The form of the bird is developed through subtle changes in the tone of paint being used, alongside careful consideration of the reference material. It is definitely a painting that it is worth coming back to with fresh eyes. Those darks and lights can be quite deceptive whilst you are deeply involved in the painting. Sometimes a break away or someone else looking at your work will pick out areas that may need further attention.
This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this Chickadee in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 33-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.

I really like to focus on the watercolour techniques needed to create a realistic painting. Likewise, I love sharing this style of painting through my tutorials and hope I inspire others to create detailed wildlife portraits too.
