Description

Learn to use watercolour to paint a multitude of textures in this realistic Elephant’s eye study

An elephant’s eyes are located on the side of the head, this gives better peripheral vision, compared to our eyes that are focused on the front of our face, and give us good binocular vision. Their eyes are about 3.8 cm in diameter, and come in different colours, mainly brown, light brown, honey and grey, although other colours have been known to occur occasionally.

Interestingly, an elephant can only see short distances, up to about 20 m. However, their sense of smell, touch and hearing more than makes up for their lack of vision.
I have classed this as an intermediate tutorial, so some watercolour experience would be beneficial. Creating the incredible skin texture, and the three-dimensional wrinkles, is probably one of the most challenging aspects of this particular study. If you have less experience, why not start with the eye, and then see whether you have the confidence to carry on with the wider study.

This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this Elephant’s eye in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 26-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.

Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed, you can dip in and out of the content, you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.

Have fun with this lesson, take your time and let me know how you get on. Try printing off the last few pages which have the larger versions of the step-by-step photos for additional help.
