Description

Original Painting of an Emperor Moth (Saturnia pavonia) by Wildlife Artist & Online Art Tutor Paul Hopkinson

The Emperor is one of Britain’s largest moths, with the female having an impressive wingspan of 10cm. Males are smaller, are more brightly coloured, and have amazing feathery antennae, which the females do not have. They are a relatively widespread moth, but they are not a common species. Their caterpillars feed on a variety of woody plants, which include blackthorn, bramble and heather.
