Description
Original Painting of a Gargoyle Gecko (Rhacodactylus auriculatus) by Wildlife Artist & Online Art Tutor Paul Hopkinson
Gargoyle geckos are a small nocturnal species, and native to New Caledonia, a group of islands between Australia and Fiji. They are characterised by bony horn-like bumps, gargoyles, on their skulls, which has led to them also being known as Knob-headed Geckos. They have a prehensile tail, like a Harvest Mouse, that they can use as a fifth limb. However, they are able to drop their tail to escape from predators, and will then regrow it.
