Description
Original Painting of a Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) by Wildlife Artist & Online Art Tutor Paul Hopkinson
You may be looking at this painting, and wondering why it isn’t of a bright pink bird. Well, the pinkness in flamingos comes and goes, and is linked to breeding. The pinker the bird, the closer it is to breeding, the feathers fade again during the post-breeding moult. Some birds become pink quicker than others, and they tend to be the dominant ones in the flock, other, quieter birds, will become pink, but it often takes them a lot longer, and they will breed later too.
