A Realistic Watercolour Study of an Old Wooden Gate, Complete with Rusty Hinge and Wildlife

This was a painting that gradually evolved. Having recently spotted this old gate on one of our walks, I thought it may be ideal for a tutorial on painting rust. I then decided to carry on and paint a section of the old gate itself. Pleased with the finished piece, I left it downstairs for Jo to look at. “I think you should add some interest to the painting, some insects or something” is what she said, there’s just no pleasing some people! Now came the tricky part, as we both felt the animals should be actually on the gate. Well, I have to agree she was right (don’t tell her!) and the addition of some life really does bring the painting together.

You have a few options; you can follow me exactly and go through the entire process, including lifting off the paint, so the critters can be added. Alternatively, you can draw the critters in at the start and either paint around them, or mask them off. Or as another option altogether, you could paint everything separately as individual study pieces.
