Learn to Paint an Otter in Watercolour, with my Step by Step Downloadable PDF Tutorial
This painting, and the associated tutorial, is my way of supporting and spreading the word about the UK Wild Otter Trust (ukwildottertrust.org), and the amazing work that they do. Jo and I recently attended an inspiring talk given by the founder of the charity, and a friend of the Trust has supplied the photo that I worked from.
Otters are an elusive mammal, but nevertheless they remain one of our top predators here in the UK. They feed mainly on fish, but will take other aquatic dwelling animals when the opportunity arises. Their fur is incredibly thick, keeping them warm for their life in water, but they do need clean rivers with plenty of suitable habitat for their underground burrows.
I’ve classed this as an intermediate project, as we use quite a lot of masking fluid, and a multi-layered approach to creating the grass, and the wet fur with the associated sheen is another challenging aspect of this study. That said, we approach all these stages in small steps, and as always, I explain each of these as we work through them. If you like the look of the painting, just give it a go, there’s nothing to lose.
This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this Otter in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 32-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.
Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed, you can dip in and out of the content, you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.
Have fun with this lesson, take your time and let me know how you get on. Try printing off the last few pages which have the larger versions of the step-by-step photos for additional help.
