Poppy Watercolour Painting Tutorial, Learn how to Paint Realistic, Detailed Flowers at Home

This iconic flower has long been associated with remembrance, so it seems fitting to be releasing this tutorial on November 11th, Armistice Day or Remembrance Day as it is also known. This bright, cheerful little flower flourished in the battle worn landscapes left by the First World War, showing nature’s resilience in the face of adversity. The poppy has always been associated with arable fields, but was considered a ‘weed’ and declined as a result. However, resilient as ever, it is now a flower of choice, for anyone wanting to establish a wild flower area within their garden or local area. So lovely to see it’s cheerful little face across our landscape once again.

As a standalone project this works really well, but maybe you would like to incorporate it into a larger wildlife study instead? We work with quite a limited palette, so you will need to mix your paints quite carefully, to achieve the different tones and shades that you will need. The lesson is set out in stages, with written guidance supported by photographs of my own work.

This is an instant PDF download, you could start work on this Poppy in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 24-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.

Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed, you can dip in and out of the content, you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.

Have fun with this lesson, take your time and let me know how you get on. Try printing off the last few pages which have the larger versions of the step-by-step photos for additional help.
