Learn my Realistic Illustration Style of Watercolour Painting with this Red Kite Bird of Prey Study Piece
We have been keen to see a Red Kite around our village in North Devon for a couple of years. In fact, ever since, a neighbour said he had seen one flying over. Last year we managed it, and we spent some time watching one of these magnificent birds hunting over a field which was being cut for silage. The distinctive forked tail, and rusty-brown coloured body was unmistakeable. It was lovely to see this bird in Devon, it was nearly wiped out in the UK in the early 1900s, but is slowly making its way back into our countryside.
I approached this painting very much as a study piece, with three main aspects – the beak, eye and feathers. The tutorial is broken down into these three sections, and we work systematically through each one. It is therefore a lesson that is suitable for all levels of ability, and indeed it would be ideal for a beginner. I have however included a photo which shows much more of the bird, so if you fancy going freelance with the rest of the painting, be my guest.
This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this Red Kite in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 36-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.
Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed, you can dip in and out of the content, you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.
Have fun with this lesson, take your time and let me know how you get on. Try printing off the last few pages which have the larger versions of the step-by-step photos for additional help.
