Description
Original Painting of a Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary (Boloria selene) by Wildlife Artist & Online Art Tutor Paul Hopkinson
This species of Fritillary can be found in grassy habitats, woodlands and moorlands, and generally favours slightly damper conditions. Its caterpillars feed on Violets, usually Common Dog Violets and Marsh Violets. Its name comes from the row of ‘pearls’, which can be seen along the outside edge of the underside of the hindwing. Sadly, this delightful little butterfly has undergone severe declines in England, but remains widespread in Scotland and Wales.
