Learn to Paint a Stoat in Watercolour, with my Step by Step Downloadable PDF Tutorial
Stoats are voracious predators, not afraid to take on prey five times their own size. With their long, thin, and low-slung body, they are experts at hunting rabbits and small rodents. Compared to a Weasel, they have a longer tail with a black tip, and they are larger than them too. They tend to move with a bounding gait, whereas a weasel simply runs close to the ground.
The challenge with this project is to work from two photos in order to create a more natural setting for the Stoat. I have created a mock-up of this, but you may still need to refer to the original photos for the finer details around the areas that the images are merged. Or you may have your own idea about a setting for the Stoat, that’s the beauty of being an artist, we can change things as much as we like.
I have classed this as in intermediate level tutorial, as there are a number of different elements, but once the techniques for each are mastered, it is just a case of repeating them over the whole area. Feel free to use sections of the tutorial in other paintings, or just work on a single small area to build confidence.
This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this Lapwing in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 42-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. Stoat, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.
Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed, you can dip in and out of the content, you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.
Have fun with this lesson, take your time and let me know how you get on. Try printing off the last few pages which have the larger versions of the step-by-step photos for additional help.
