Learn to Paint a Swallowtail in Watercolour, with my Step by Step Downloadable PDF Tutorial
The Swallowtail is the largest butterfly in the UK, but unfortunately it is also one of our rarest. That said, Jo and I did see Swallowtails, when we visited Norfolk a few years ago. In fact, we spotted them as soon as we arrived, they lulled us into a false sense of security, as we didn’t see them again all week! They live on wet fenland, with their caterpillars, that are equally stunning, feeding solely on Milk-parsley.
We’ve not painted a butterfly for a while, so I thought I’d choose one that had some different techniques involved in the painting process. So be prepared to use quite a bit of masking fluid, and hundreds of tiny dots! If you’ve not used masking fluid in this way before, I would strongly advise practising on some scrap paper, so you are confident that you can apply it finely enough. With this in mind, I’ve classed this as an intermediate project.
This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this Swallowtail in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 29-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.
Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed, you can dip in and out of the content, you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.
Have fun with this lesson, take your time and let me know how you get on. Try printing off the last few pages which have the larger versions of the step-by-step photos for additional help.
