Learn to Paint a Toco Toucan in Watercolour, with my Step by Step Downloadable PDF Tutorial
The Toco Toucan is the largest of the world’s 43 toucan species, with a bill of 7.5” / 19cm, which represents about half its length. It lives in the tropical forests of South America, where the bill comes in useful for gathering any fruits, insects and eggs which would otherwise be out of reach. They nest in tree cavities, and young birds do not hatch with the long bill, it grows over several months.
It is the bill and the black feathers that we will focus on in this intermediate level tutorial. The bill is obviously brightly coloured, but the details are very soft, and we therefore use wet-in-wet techniques to create the patterns and colour changes. Black feathers are an aspect of wildlife painting that I’ve been asked to cover on more than one occasion, so this seemed the ideal opportunity. You can of course use the techniques that you will learn, for any bird with black plumage.
This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this Toucan in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 41-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.
Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed, you can dip in and out of the content, you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.
Have fun with this lesson, take your time and let me know how you get on. Try printing off the last few pages which have the larger versions of the step-by-step photos for additional help.
