Description
Learn ink drawing techniques as you work on this study of an Ammonite. Then finish the painting with a wash of watercolour.
Ammonites are a very well known type of fossil. These animals lived in the seas at least 65 million years ago, when they became extinct alongside the dinosaurs. They belong to a group of creatures known as cephalopods, which are types of mollusc. Squid, Octopus and Cuttlefish are living relatives of the Ammonites, although they look nothing like them!
This study has been worked in pen and wash, with the intricate drawing first completed using ink. As all the sections of the shell are really similar, it is vital that you keep a careful eye on where you are within the reference photo. Remember, that taking breaks will rest your eyes, and will enable a fresh perspective on the whole painting. The colours are added at the end as a light wash, and really enhance the work that you have already done on the tones and detail.
This is an instant PDF download, you could start work on this Ammonite in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 25-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.
Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed, you can dip in and out of the content, you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.
Have fun with this lesson, take your time and let me know how you get on. Try printing off the last few pages which have the larger versions of the step-by-step photos for additional help.
