Learn to Paint a Bullfinch in Watercolour, with my Step by Step Downloadable PDF Tutorial
Bullfinches can be found throughout the UK, but generally in woodlands, hedgerows and scrubby areas. They like to nest in dense vegetation, and it is often the sight of their white rump, as they leave this type of area, that gives their presence away. Their song is easy to overlook, a quiet warble or a soft whistle, which doesn’t really match the plump almost show-off plumage of the male. It is their love of flower buds in the spring which perhaps draws attention to them, we always see them feeding on the forget-me-nots or apple blossom.
This is an intermediate tutorial, with a bright background, which may be challenging. You can of course change the background colours to something more subtle, or omit them altogether. The bird itself is relatively straightforward to paint, apart from the darkest tones, which must be built up with little lines, or you run the risk of them becoming a solid, more cartoon style colour.
This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this Bullfinch in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 37-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.
Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed, you can dip in and out of the content, you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.
Have fun with this lesson, take your time and let me know how you get on. Try printing off the last few pages which have the larger versions of the step-by-step photos for additional help.
