This species of crane, lives around wetland habitats in East and South Africa. Their stomping around flushes possible meals from the ground, including insects, frogs, worms, grasses and even snakes. Whilst they nest in pairs, they tend to form communal flocks, sometimes of over 100 birds, when they roost at night.

I’ve classed this as an intermediate project, there are a number of different elements, but as long as you follow my guidelines, you should be able to master each technique, and bring them together to paint this lovely bird. For anyone who feels a little overwhelmed, isolate an element of the painting, and focus on just one type of skill. So perhaps the crown, the large body feathers, or even the bright red pouch!
