Learn to Paint a Flamingo in Watercolour, with my Step by Step Downloadable PDF Tutorial

You may be looking at this painting, and wondering why we are not painting a bright pink bird, well, the pinkness in flamingos comes and goes, and is linked to breeding. The pinker the bird, the closer it is to breeding, the feathers fade again during the post-breeding moult. Some birds become pink quicker than others, and they tend to be the dominant ones in the flock, other, quieter birds, will become pink, but it often takes them a lot longer, and they will breed later too.

I chose this painting because of the reflection. This will be the first time we’ve painted a ‘focused’ reflection, rather than just a suggestion, or a blurry one. I used an under-painting technique to create the shape and form of the bird, so be prepared for it looking very grey for quite some time. You could of course underlay with pinker tones if you prefer.

I’ve classed this as in intermediate project, so some experience would be helpful, but not essential, and if you like the painting, and want to have a go, just do it. What have you got to lose anyway?

This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this Greater Flamingo in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 33-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.

Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed, you can dip in and out of the content, you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.

Have fun with this lesson, take your time and let me know how you get on. Try printing off the last few pages which have the larger versions of the step-by-step photos for additional help.
