Paint Realistic Watercolor Butterflies – Downloadable Golden Helicon PDF

The Golden Helicon butterfly has a variety of names, some call it the Tiger Longwing or the Hecale Longwing.  Others know it as the Hecale Longwing, the Golden Longwing or the Golden Heliconian.  I just know it as a beautiful butterfly and one that I very much enjoyed painting.  I can see where the reference to tigers came in, such striking oranges, blacks and whites.  They stand out against the vivid coloured leaf – well I think it is a leaf, it is so difficult to tell!

I have classed this tutorial as an intermediate level as not only are you working with extremely fine lines but also a variety of white and black areas.  On top of this there is a need to create texture across the wings in order to make them look realistic.  This requires a lot of individual brush strokes rather than just filling in with a flat colour.  That said, if you are a less-experienced painter why don’t you take a look at my video on creating fine lines before you start and perhaps just practise the body section before launching into the whole project.  This will build your confidence and should help you with your brush control in general.

This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this butterfly in a matter of minutes.  Indeed, there’s no need to even wait for the post to arrive.  You will receive a 36-page PDF document, set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines.  However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.

Work at your own speed

Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed.  Firstly you can dip in and out of the content.  Secondly you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.

I really like to focus on the watercolour techniques needed to create a realistic painting.  Likewise, I love sharing this style of painting through my tutorials and hope I inspire others to create detailed wildlife portraits too.
